Old Leighlin Basketball Club was officially established in 1997. The club affiliated to the Kilkenny area board in October 1997 which is the only board catering for basketball in the South east and to which around seven counties are affiliated. This allows players to take part in competition and plays a major part in the development of players. Prior to this players from the area were affiliated to Paulstown B.C. and several underage leagues were won under name of Paulstown. Due to an increase in the number of players in the area it was decided during the summer of 1997 that we affiliate as Old Leighlin and so began the club of Old Leighlin as we now know it. Quite a number of these underage players both boys and girls now play senior with the club.

Old Leighlin Basketball Club has gone from strength to strength since the construction of the community hall in the village in 2005.  There are 2 senior women and 3 senior men’s teams competing in the Kilkenny League and Midlands league. However it’s at the juvenile level that real progress has been made.  Boys and girls from ages 8 to 18 are training weekly during the season and taking part in their own leagues.  The club has 9 juvenile teams with some of the teams having as many as 20 players registered on their panel.  There are also opportunities for teenagers to get involved in the club in different ways by training to be a referee, officiating on the table at matches or partaking in coaching courses to assist with the younger members of the club.  All newcomers are very welcome.
